2014 Kia Sorento
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

The scam pattern is consistent: a low number over the phone, then a much higher number once you are standing in a parking lot with no other options. Kia owners document this on forums regularly, sometimes describing locksmiths who quote a trip fee, arrive, claim the car is "too new" or "requires dealer tools," and walk away with the fee anyway.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. Once the new fob is registered to your 2014 Kia Sorento through the immobilizer system, it behaves the same as the factory key. I test every function on site before I leave: door handles, lock and unlock buttons, the start button, and the emergency insert blade in the door cylinder. If anything is off, I sort it out on the spot. You are not signing off on a key that works "mostly.

Q: My 2014 Sorento shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What is actually going on?

This comes up a lot on Sorento owner forums. A fresh CR2032 does not automatically mean a good connection. If the battery tabs inside the fob are slightly bent or corroded from a previous swap, the car can still fail to read the fob even with a brand-new cell seated in it. The dash warning appears, the start button may flash or refuse to engage, and the door handle sensors can stop responding.

Q: I have one working key for my Sorento. Do I need a spare, or can I wait?

One key on a smart key vehicle is a real exposure. If that fob fails or gets lost, you are in an all-keys-lost situation, which takes longer and costs more than adding a spare while a working key is still present. With a working key on hand, the process is faster because the system does not need a full security reset before it can accept the new fob. Waiting until the one key stops working removes that shortcut entirely.

2014 Kia Sorento Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A travel nurse on a 13-week contract called me from her apartment garage in Carmel Valley on a Monday morning. She needed a new smart key for her 2014 Kia Sorento. The dealer told her Friday. Not this Friday. The coming Friday.

She was doing shift work at a hospital and did not have four days to burn on ride shares. She had already done the math: four days of rides, plus the tow to get the car to the dealer, plus whatever they were quoting for the key itself. It added up fast.

I pulled into that garage Monday afternoon. She watched me connect through the OBD port, run the Kia smart key registration, and cut the emergency insert blade right there on the car. I walked every button with her before I packed up. Lock, unlock, the handle sensors on both front doors, the start button. Everything came back the way it should.

She drove herself to work Tuesday morning. The dealer never even made it to her appointment slot.

I did not mention the dealer comparison. She brought it up on her own, halfway through watching me work. Said she wished she had called Friday and skipped the whole thing.

Kia Sorento Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Kia vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services license (LCO#6792) and carries full liability insurance. For a 2014 Kia Sorento smart key, the programming side of the job goes through the OBD port using professional diagnostic equipment capable of communicating with Kia's immobilizer system. Not every locksmith has that equipment or knows the Kia-specific procedure.
