2004 Kia Sorento
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2004 Kia Sorento use?

It uses a mechanical metal key. No remote, no fob, no buttons, no battery. It turns in the ignition cylinder and in the door locks, and that is the complete system for this model year. Replacement means cutting a new key to match your vehicle, either from a key code or by decoding the existing key or a lock on the car. There is no programming step involved.

Q: Why does the dealer make key replacement feel complicated when it should be simple?

Dealership workflow adds layers to jobs that do not need them. For a 2004 Sorento, the key itself is mechanical, so there is no programming involved. But a dealer still runs it through the standard service process: write-up, tech assignment, labor billing at their shop rate. Owners on forums report being quoted full labor hours for work that amounts to a few minutes of cutting.

Q: I have the original key but it is worn down and getting hard to turn. Can a worn key be copied accurately?

Sometimes, but a heavily worn key is a risky template. If the cuts have rounded off from years of use, a direct copy of that key may not turn as well as you expect, or may not work in all the locks. The better move is to have the key decoded against the lock itself rather than traced from the worn blade.

Q: My 2004 Sorento key broke off in the ignition. What are my options?

Extraction first, then a new key cut. A broken key in the ignition cylinder needs to come out before anything else. Forcing it or digging at it with the wrong tool can push the fragment deeper or damage the cylinder. Once it is out, a replacement key is cut to the vehicle.

2004 Kia Sorento Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in Harbison Canyon on a Tuesday morning when the call came in. A woman had locked her only key inside her 2004 Kia Sorento in a gravel pullout off one of the back roads. She had found my number, called, and was very calm about it, which I appreciated. No panic, just a practical problem that needed a practical fix.

When I got there she was sitting on a low wall near the front of the vehicle, waiting. The Sorento was locked up tight. First thing was getting her back in, which took a few minutes with the right tools. Once the door was open, the key was right there in the cup holder.

Then she asked if I could cut a spare while I was already there. Smart move. A 2004 Sorento takes a straightforward metal key cut to the vehicle, so I decoded the existing key on the spot and cut a copy right off the van. The whole visit, entry plus cutting the spare, ran well under an hour start to finish.

She said the dealer in Alpine had quoted her a wait and a trip just to get a duplicate cut. I was already in her driveway.

Kia Sorento Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Kia dealer take for a replacement key on a 2004 Sorento?▼

Longer than the job actually takes. Getting a key cut for a 2004 Sorento is a short job because this vehicle uses a plain mechanical key. The cutting itself is a few minutes. But at a dealer, you are booking into a service queue that may be a week or two out depending on how busy they are, writing up a repair order, and paying a labor rate for time that has very little to do with the key itself.
