1996 Nissan Sentra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a locksmith cheaper than going to the Nissan dealer for a key this old?

On a 1996 Sentra, almost always by a significant margin. Dealers price their labor for current vehicles, and an older car often costs the same in shop time even though the job is simpler. There's also the tow factor: if you're locked out or have no working key, you're paying a tow truck before the dealer even looks at it.

Q: Does the price include cutting and everything else?

Yes. One price covers the key blank, the cut, and testing it in both the door and the ignition before I leave. No separate line items. On a 1996 Sentra, it really is that simple: a metal key cut to your car, confirmed working, done at your location.

Q: My 1996 Sentra has different keys for the door and the ignition. Is that normal?

It happens on cars this age, and it's usually a wear issue rather than how it left the factory. Lock cylinders wear independently. The ignition gets turned thousands more times than the door lock, so the wafer positions drift at different rates over the years. Eventually the same key that opens the door will no longer turn the ignition smoothly, or at all. The fix is decoding each cylinder separately and cutting a key that satisfies both.

Q: Can I just get a copy made at a hardware store?

You can, if the original key is in decent shape. But a hardware store duplicates what it sees. If your existing key is worn, the copy inherits every worn edge. On a 30-year-old car, that worn copy will work for a while and then start getting fussy. Decoding the lock and cutting to the actual lock spec, rather than to the worn key, gives you a key that fits like it did when the car was new.

1996 Nissan Sentra Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach. He'd been browsing the shops, came back to his 1996 Nissan Sentra, and his key snapped. Half of it was still in the door lock. He had the other half in his hand.

He'd already tried a magnet and a thumbnail. Neither one worked, and now he was standing on the sidewalk in the afternoon sun holding half a key and wondering if his weekend was ruined.

I carry the tools to extract broken key fragments from cylinders without damaging the lock. Got the broken piece out clean. Then I decoded the door lock directly, reading the wafer positions, and cut a fresh key to match. Fit the lock, fit the ignition, started right up.

He mentioned the dealer as we were wrapping up. Nearest Nissan dealer, he figured, would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill that made no sense for a car this age. He paid a fraction of that, right there on the street, and drove off before the shops on Cedros even closed.

Nissan Sentra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 1996 Nissan Sentra key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but it's way less than what a dealer situation would run you. And on a 1996 Sentra, the dealer route gets complicated fast: they may not stock a key blank for a car this old, which means sourcing one, which means waiting. We come to you in Solana Beach, decode or cut the key on site, and you're driving again the same day. One price, no surprises.
