I was parked near the Montgomery side of Chula Vista when the call came in. Owner of a 2009 Nissan Sentra, Intelligent Key trim. The fob had stopped working and he was doing everything manually with the emergency insert key tucked inside the fob.
He had already gone to the dealer. They told him the fob needed to be replaced and reprogrammed, and gave him a number to call back with once he decided. He decided to call me instead.
When I got there, I asked him when it started. He said gradually. First the range got short, then the door handle stopped responding, then it just quit. That pattern almost always points one direction.
I popped the fob open on the hood of my van. The CR2032 inside was original. The contacts had a film on them and the battery had just enough juice to fool someone into thinking it was fine. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, and snapped it back together.
Walked every function. Door lock, door unlock, the trunk release, all four buttons. Then I checked the handle touch response on both front doors. Everything came back clean. The fob had never actually failed.
He was quiet for a second, then said he had almost paid for a whole new fob and a programming appointment. I get that reaction a lot. The fix being small does not make it less real. He drove out of there with a fob that worked and a fraction of what the dealer wanted still in his pocket.
