Cardiff-by-the-Sea sits right on the water and the salt air does a number on everything, including key plastics. A home daycare operator who ran her operation out of a bungalow near the neighborhood called me because her 2005 Sentra key had split along the head, right where the blade meets the plastic housing. I drove out that evening with replacement shells and my decoding tools. The chip in her cracked key was reading fine. I popped the electronics out of the old housing, fitted them into a matching aftermarket shell that snaps together the way the factory one does, and then decoded the lock and cut a fresh blade to match. Tested it in the ignition, started clean on the first turn. Checked it again in the door cylinder. Done.
She had held off getting a spare because she figured it would be expensive. So I made her one while I was already there. Two working keys, both tested, handed off at her driveway.
The dealer quote came up in conversation but only as a shrug. She had already moved on.
