1997 Nissan Sentra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Does all-keys-lost cost more than just getting a spare made?

On a '97 Sentra, the gap is smaller than on modern Nissans, but all-keys-lost is still more work. With a working key in hand, cutting a spare is quick, a locksmith decodes your existing key and cuts a copy. When you have nothing to work from, we decode the lock directly or look up the key code through the vehicle identification, which takes more time. Get a spare cut while you still have a working key.

Q: Are aftermarket keys cheaper for the 1997 Sentra and do they work?

On a '97 Sentra, the aftermarket question is simpler than on newer Nissans. This is a mechanical key, so there's no fob compatibility or programming to worry about. A key blank is a key blank. What matters is that it's the correct profile for this vehicle and that it gets cut accurately. A cheap blank cut badly is worse than a quality blank cut right. I use blanks I've tested and trust, and I cut them precisely.

Q: My 1997 Sentra ignition is hard to turn even with the original key. Do I need a new ignition?

Not necessarily. On a car this age, the ignition cylinder wafers wear down and the key wears with them. When both are worn together, they've been "working" in a degraded state for years. A freshly cut key with sharp, accurate cuts can actually feel stiffer at first because it's lifting the wafers the way they were designed to be lifted. Lubrication helps too.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my 1997 Sentra if I have zero keys and no idea what the code is?

Yes. Two ways to handle it. If the VIN traces back to a key code on record, I can pull it. If not, I decode the lock directly, either the door lock or the ignition cylinder, and cut from that. Neither method requires a working key to start from. Bring proof of ownership and I'll take care of the rest, right there in West Santee.

1997 Nissan Sentra Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in West Santee on a Tuesday morning. He'd had the same key for his 1997 Sentra since he bought it used, and it finally gave out, or so he thought. The key was snapping in and out of the ignition like it had always done, but suddenly it wasn't turning all the way. He figured he needed a whole new key made.

I drove out and took a look. The key itself was worn down pretty significantly after nearly three decades of use. The cuts were rounded off enough that the wafers in the cylinder weren't lifting cleanly. It was also just dirty inside the cylinder, which doesn't help on an older Nissan that's probably never had the lock serviced.

I decoded the existing key and cut him a fresh one with clean, accurate cuts. Lubed the cylinder while I was at it. It turned like it was new.

He asked if he needed to go to the dealer for anything. I told him no, there's nothing to program on a '97 Sentra. You get the key cut right and you're done. He'd already called the dealer earlier that week and was quoted more than he expected just for a basic key, plus they wanted the car brought in. He saved a good chunk coming to me instead, and I came to him.

Nissan Sentra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 1997 Nissan Sentra key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. The 1997 Sentra uses a standard mechanical key, so replacement is about cutting a key to your vehicle, nothing more. A dealer will still charge you for the visit, and you may need to bring the car in or prove ownership through a longer process. A mobile locksmith can decode your lock or work from the key code and cut a replacement on-site in West Santee. No tow, no appointment days out, no programming fees.
