I got a call from a guy over in West Santee on a Tuesday morning. He'd had the same key for his 1997 Sentra since he bought it used, and it finally gave out, or so he thought. The key was snapping in and out of the ignition like it had always done, but suddenly it wasn't turning all the way. He figured he needed a whole new key made.
I drove out and took a look. The key itself was worn down pretty significantly after nearly three decades of use. The cuts were rounded off enough that the wafers in the cylinder weren't lifting cleanly. It was also just dirty inside the cylinder, which doesn't help on an older Nissan that's probably never had the lock serviced.
I decoded the existing key and cut him a fresh one with clean, accurate cuts. Lubed the cylinder while I was at it. It turned like it was new.
He asked if he needed to go to the dealer for anything. I told him no, there's nothing to program on a '97 Sentra. You get the key cut right and you're done. He'd already called the dealer earlier that week and was quoted more than he expected just for a basic key, plus they wanted the car brought in. He saved a good chunk coming to me instead, and I came to him.
