Question 2

The dealer told me to tow my Sentra in for a new key. Is that really necessary?

It's necessary for them. It's not necessary for you.

Dealers need the vehicle physically in their service bay because their key programming equipment is fixed to the shop. The tow is their workaround for that. On a 2003 Sentra with no working key, towing adds real money to your bill before the dealer has touched anything. Then you're waiting on parts, waiting on a service slot, and paying dealer labor rates on top.

What do I need to show to prove I own the vehicle?

That's standard practice whether you go to a locksmith or a dealer, and it protects you as much as it protects me. I check it on site and it takes about two minutes.

My 2003 Sentra cranks but won't stay running. Could this be a key and immobilizer issue?

That's actually the classic sign of an immobilizer doing exactly what it's supposed to do when it doesn't recognize the key's transponder chip. The engine cranks because the starter circuit isn't blocked. It fires briefly and dies because the immobilizer cuts fuel or ignition once it finishes its check and comes up empty.

A few things cause this on a 2003 Sentra. The chip inside the key head can fail on its own, especially on older keys that have been on a crowded keyring for years. The transponder antenna ring around the ignition cylinder can shift or get damaged. Or the key was never properly programmed to begin with, which happens a lot with keys bought online and "programmed" by someone without the right equipment.

If your car behaves this way with a key you've used for years and nothing changed, start with the key itself. If it behaves this way with a replacement key, the antenna ring is the next thing to look at. I can diagnose both on site.

I bought a replacement transponder key online. Why won't it start my Sentra?

Because cutting the blade is only half the job. The chip inside still needs to be programmed to your specific vehicle's immobilizer. An unprogrammed key will crank the car and immediately kill it, same as the wrong key entirely.

The 2003 Sentra's immobilizer stores a list of recognized transponder chips. Any key not on that list gets rejected. Programming writes your new key onto that list using a compatible tool connected to the OBD port. There's no ignition-turn sequence or owner-accessible relearn on this system. You need the tool.

Bring the blank you bought. If it's a compatible key blank, I can cut it to your vehicle and program it. That saves you the blank cost at least.
