I got a call from a woman in Lakeside Proper, over near the older residential streets off Woodside. Her purse had been grabbed at a valet lot while she was out celebrating a birthday. Keys, wallet, phone, all gone. She borrowed someone's phone to call the police, then her roommate, then me.

Her 2000 Nissan Sentra was sitting in that lot with zero working keys. Her roommate had already called the dealer while waiting for the police report. The dealer said they could not do anything that night, that the car would need to be towed in, that parts had to be ordered, and that they strongly recommended a lock inspection given that whoever grabbed the purse now had a key to her car. I also decoded the door lock and cut the blades on site so both keys worked mechanically as well.

She drove home that night. The stolen key, wherever it is now, will not start that car. Her roommate, who had been quietly doing the math on the dealer estimate, just said "that's it?"
