Out in Harbison Canyon, the roads get quiet fast once you're past the main stretch. A guy called me mid-afternoon about his 2006 Nissan Sentra. He had one key, and he'd been using it for years without a second thought. That morning it went into the ignition, turned fine, and the engine fired up -- then died within a second or two. Tried it again. Same thing. Car wouldn't stay running.

The chip itself was still physically intact, but the data the system was reading off it didn't match what the car expected anymore.
Cut a new key blank to his vehicle, programmed the replacement transponder to the car's immobilizer, erased the old entry to keep things clean. First turn, engine started and stayed running.
He had a spare in his hand about 25 minutes after I pulled up. Saved him a tow and a dealer appointment he would have waited two days to get.
