2001 Nissan Sentra Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was out near the Grossmont Area on a Tuesday afternoon when a call came in. Long-haul delivery driver, pulled over just outside La Mesa. His key blade had snapped clean inside the ignition of his 2001 Nissan Sentra. Half the blade was still in the cylinder.
He had already called another locksmith. That locksmith told him the ignition cylinder would need to be drilled and replaced, new keys cut and programmed to the new cylinder, and the bill would be somewhere north of five hundred. He called me for a second opinion before agreeing to that.
I used a pick tool to extract the broken blade fragment from the ignition without touching the wafer surfaces. Once the fragment was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly, which gave me the exact cut depths I needed. I cut a new key blade from that decode on the spot.
Then came the programming side. The 2001 Sentra has a transponder in the key head that has to be registered to the vehicle's immobilizer before the engine will stay running. I connected through the OBD port and enrolled the new key. First crank, it fired right up and stayed running.
No drilling. No cylinder replacement. No ignition assembly. His original lock works with the new key exactly as it did before.
He just stared at it running for a second, then said he was glad he made that second call. The dealer comparison didn't even come up. He just needed someone who knew the job.
