1998 Nissan Sentra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 1998 Nissan Sentra actually use?

Straight metal key, edge-cut, no fob attached. No buttons, no battery, no remote functions. You put it in the ignition cylinder and turn it. Same key works the door locks. If you need a replacement, it gets cut to your vehicle, and that's the job.

Q: How does a locksmith compare to the dealer for a basic key like this?

For a 1998 Sentra, the dealer isn't really set up to be your best option anyway. They'd likely refer you to a locksmith or charge a service write-up fee just to look at it. A mobile locksmith comes to you in the Las Americas Area, cuts the key on site, and you're done. Way less than any dealer trip once you add in towing if the car is stuck somewhere. Call for current pricing.

Q: I lost both keys to my 1998 Sentra. Can a key still be made without having a working one to copy?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a vehicle like this is handled one of two ways. If the key code is on record and can be pulled from the VIN, a new key gets cut directly to that code. If not, a locksmith can decode one of the lock cylinders, usually the door, and cut a key from what the lock reads. No working key needed.

Q: My 1998 Sentra key turns hard in the ignition and sometimes doesn't come out. Is the key worn out or is it the cylinder?

Usually the cylinder. On a vehicle this age, the ignition wafer tumblers wear down over years of use, and the cylinder can get sticky, hang up on removal, or occasionally trap the key. A worn key can make it worse by not riding the tumblers cleanly, so if you have a spare that's less worn, try that first. If both keys feel the same, the cylinder is the issue. A locksmith can often service or rekey the cylinder on site.

1998 Nissan Sentra Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in the Las Americas Area near San Ysidro called about her 1998 Nissan Sentra. She had one key left, and it snapped off in the door lock. Half the blade was still inside the cylinder.

She'd already tried the tweezers approach. It just pushed the broken piece deeper.

I came out to her, pulled the broken fragment from the door cylinder with the right extraction tools, then decoded the lock while I had it open. Cut her a new key to match, tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Everything turned clean.

She asked if she should get a spare made. Told her yes, always keep two. Made her a second one on the spot.

That was the whole job. No tow, no dealer waiting room, no leaving the car somewhere overnight. Done in her driveway off the street.

Nissan Sentra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does key replacement for older Nissans cost anything at all if there's no chip involved?▼

Fair question. The cost on a job like this is the service call and the cutting, not programming fees. A locksmith comes to you, looks up or decodes your key code, and cuts a working key on site. The materials are inexpensive. What you're paying for is the mobile response and the skill to do it right the first time, especially in an all-keys-lost situation where extraction or decoding is part of the work.
