I was parked near the Ferry Landing in Coronado, finishing notes from a previous call, when this one came in.
A guy had a 2014 Sentra with the Intelligent Key package. He'd been having intermittent issues for a couple weeks: the door handle touch unlock would miss sometimes, then work fine. He figured it was the fob dying. Then one morning it just stopped detecting the key entirely. A key-not-detected warning sitting on the dash every time he got near the car.
He'd already been to the dealer. They told him the fob needed to be replaced and reprogrammed, quoted him a number that made him pause, and said he'd need to leave the car with them. He was parked at a lot right there in the Ferry Landing area, needed the car back same day, and didn't want to deal with a tow.
He called me instead.
I got there, pulled the fob apart on the hood. The CR2032 inside wasn't dead, but it was sitting off-angle. The tray had a slight warp, probably from being pried open with something flat and sharp instead of the right tool. Contact wasn't consistent. That alone explained the weeks of intermittent behavior.
Reseated a fresh CR2032, straightened the contact clip, snapped the fob back together properly.
Then I walked it: door handle touch on both sides, lock button, unlock, the whole sequence. Everything came back clean. Key-not-detected warning gone.
He didn't need a new fob. Didn't need programming. Didn't need to leave his car anywhere. The dealer quote never came back up because it didn't need to.
