Out on the shoulder of a surface road near Rancho Del Oro in Oceanside, a guy had half a key blade sitting in his hand and the other half lodged in his Sequoia's ignition cylinder. He'd been trying to start the truck, felt resistance, and pushed a little too hard. Happens more than people think on keys that have a few years of wear and bending stress on them.
He called one locksmith first. That guy quoted him a full ignition replacement over the phone, no diagnostic, no attempt at extraction. Just go straight to drill and swap.
I showed up with my extraction tools and a Lishi decoder that fits Toyota's keyway. The broken fragment was in there clean, not spun, not wedged sideways into the wafers. I worked it out without touching the wafer stack. Once the fragment was out, I read the lock, decoded the cuts, and used that to cut a fresh key blade.
Then the chip side. The 2004 Sequoia uses a transponder in the key separate from the remote fob. I programmed the new key's transponder through the OBD port. His original fob with the factory FCC ID on it was completely fine the whole time. It was never the problem. I just needed a new metal key with the correct chip enrolled to the immobilizer.
The cylinder still has the original lock. No drilling. No parts replaced that didn't need replacing. He drove away on his own from the same spot where he'd been stuck.
The other locksmith's quote would have cost him a lot more and left him with a swapped ignition. Sometimes the patient approach is also the faster one.
