A woman near Bay Marina in National City had been driving her 2005 Sequoia on a single key for longer than she wanted to admit. One afternoon the housing cracked, and when she went to use the door lock cylinder, the blade snapped. Half of it stayed in the lock. She was standing in a parking lot holding the fob shell in one hand and nothing useful in the other.
She called me and I came to her.
The first thing I checked was the transponder chip inside the broken housing. When a blade snaps or a shell cracks, people assume the whole key is gone. Usually it isn't. The chip sits in the head of the key, and unless it took a direct hit, it survives. Hers did. I was able to read the transponder data from the damaged housing, which meant I could skip a full all-keys-lost reset and work from what was already programmed. That saves time.
Then I extracted the blade fragment from the door lock, decoded the cylinder, and cut two new keys to match. I rebuilt one remote using her original circuit board in a fresh shell, so the remote programming carried over. The second key got programmed on site.
She went from a broken key stuck in a lock to two fully working remotes in about 40 minutes. She mentioned the dealer had been mentioned to her as an option. I left that alone.
If you still have your broken key, even just the head, bring it or have it ready when I arrive. The chip inside a cracked fob is more often intact than not, and it changes how the job goes.
