2011 Toyota Sequoia
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2011 Toyota Sequoia Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on the street in Downtown National City when the call came in. A woman had just walked out of the Costco off Sweetwater Road and her 2011 Sequoia wouldn't start. Not a dead battery situation. The engine would turn over and then cut out immediately. She'd already gotten a jump from a stranger in the lot thinking that was it.

I pulled up and asked her one question: did the key ever get copied at a kiosk? She paused. Said she'd had a spare made a while back and had been using it for months without issue. Then about two weeks ago it started doing this.

That told me most of what I needed to know. The kiosk copy looks identical to the original. Same blade shape, same plastic head. But there's no chip inside, or the chip it carries isn't enrolled to that vehicle. Her original key was in a junk drawer at home. She'd been driving on the copy and hadn't thought twice about it until it stopped cooperating.

I connected my programming tool through the OBD port, pulled up the Toyota immobilizer protocol for that year, and got to work cutting and enrolling a proper replacement key with the correct transponder. Tested it three times: ignition on, engine running, no stall.

She mentioned the dealer had been her next call. Would have meant a tow, an appointment, and probably an overnight. Instead she drove out of that lot in under 40 minutes.

The technology in these keys is real. Once you understand it, the fix isn't complicated. It just has to be done right.
