Out in the Kit Carson Park area of Escondido, I got a call from someone who had already tried the obvious fix. New battery. Still getting a key-not-detected warning on the dash when she'd occasionally try to start the Sequoia. Not every time -- that's the part that made it confusing. It would start fine for a few days, then act up again.
That intermittent pattern usually points to one of two things: a contact issue inside the fob housing, or a key that's been partially knocked out of the immobilizer's memory, sometimes after a low battery event. I pulled up to her driveway, popped open the fob to check the battery seating first. The CR2016 was the right type but it was sitting slightly off-center. Corrected that, cleaned the contacts, and then connected to the OBD port to check the immobilizer side. The key was still registered, so we weren't in an all-keys-lost situation. I cleared the stored fault, re-verified the key registration, and walked through every button plus two cold-start cycles.
It fired right up both times. No warning light. No hesitation.
