I was parked off High Street in Downtown Moorpark on a Saturday when the call came in. The owner had driven to the tennis club, shut the car off, and the fob just stopped cooperating. Touch unlock on the driver door was dead. The push-button start was reading the key intermittently. He had already tried locking and unlocking with the fob from a foot away, which worked, so he knew the key wasn't completely gone.
When I got there I started with the battery. CR2032, and the one inside was original from what I could tell. Swapped it, reseated the contacts, and walked the perimeter. Touch unlock came back on the driver door. That was the whole fix on the comfort access side.
But the start was still intermittent, and that pointed somewhere else. I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port, pulled the immobilizer data, and found a stored fault tied to the key registration. The fob itself was fine. The registration had a hiccup, which happens. I ran the key through the programming sequence, cleared the fault, and tested the start three times in a row from a cold key-out state each time. Clean every time.
Then I walked the full fob. All four buttons. Locked and unlocked from about 30 feet out. Touch unlock on both handles. Three more starts.
He watched the whole thing and told me he expected me to hand him a new key and leave. The systematic testing was the part that surprised him. I told him that's the part that tells you whether the job is actually done.
