Out at Channel Islands Beach in Oxnard, a guy had his 2000 GMC Jimmy parked near the harbor and none of his remote buttons were doing anything. He'd been locking and unlocking with the physical key for about two weeks and finally got tired of it.
I met him in the lot. He handed me his old remote and the shell was rough. Sand in the seam, battery contacts green with corrosion. I cracked it open on the tailgate and the CR2032 was original. Twenty-plus years in there. The rubber button pad had two hairline cracks running through the lock and unlock contacts, which is why some presses registered and most didn't.
Replaced the pad, cleaned the board contacts with alcohol, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and reprogrammed the remote to his BCM using the standard GM on-board learn procedure: ignition on, hold lock and unlock on the remote, wait for the locks to cycle. Simple sequence, no scan tool needed for this generation.
All four buttons responded clean. Locks, unlock, panic, rear hatch release. He stood there clicking it from about forty feet away, testing range like he was trying to find the edge.
The whole thing took maybe fifteen minutes. He said the dealer told him he'd need to order a new remote assembly and schedule an appointment. He didn't need any of that.
