Why does GMC key replacement cost so much at the dealer?

On something like your 2001 Jimmy, the remote is a separate piece from the ignition key, and the programming is done through the OBD port without the kind of dealer-locked security software that newer trucks require. On newer GM trucks and SUVs, the manufacturer has moved key and fob authorization behind tools and credentials that independent shops have to pay to access, and that cost gets passed to you. Add in the parts counter markup on the fob hardware itself and you can see how a simple replacement balloons at the dealer. For a 2001 Jimmy, you don't need any of that. The job is well within what a mobile locksmith handles on-site, for a lot less than a dealer trip.

A few things can cause that. First, make sure it's a CR2032 and that the contacts inside the fob are clean and making solid contact with the battery. Corrosion on those small clips is common on remotes this age. Second, the remote may have lost its programming. On these older GM remotes, a dead battery doesn't automatically wipe the programming, but if the fob was ever left drained for a long time or someone tried a DIY reprogram that didn't complete, it can fall out of sync with the vehicle. Third, if you're standing too close to the vehicle when you test it, try stepping back about ten feet. Range on these remotes can be short at close quarters. If the battery is fresh, the contacts are clean, and range isn't the issue, it needs to be reprogrammed.

Can I program a second remote for my 2001 Jimmy myself, or do I need a tech?

You need a tech with an OBD programmer for this one. The 2001 Jimmy does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the remote. Also worth knowing: the programming session registers all fobs at once. Any remote not present during that session gets erased from the vehicle's memory.
