Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2016 GMC Yukon Xl Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A North Ranch client called me from the Conejo Creek trailhead parking lot off the east end of Thousand Oaks. He was a hiking guide, had been running groups through the hills all morning, and somewhere between the ridge and the lot his key had come out of his pocket. Gone.

He had already called another locksmith. That guy told him the ignition would need to be drilled and replaced, and the quote was high enough that the client almost just called a tow truck and accepted the whole mess. Instead he searched for a second opinion and landed on me.

I drove out to the lot. The Yukon XL was sitting exactly where he left it, nothing damaged, lock cylinder intact. I decoded the door lock mechanically, reading each wafer position without touching the internal components, and got the cut depths I needed from the cylinder itself. Cut the blade on site, built the new smart key, and ran the all-keys-lost enrollment through the OBD port. The process has a timed security relearn built in, so there's a wait period you can't rush. I walked him through what was happening while the truck counted down, which helped because he kept looking at his phone like something was going wrong.

When it finished, every button worked, the door handles responded, and the truck started clean.

No drilling. No new cylinder. No tow. The other locksmith's plan would have added a replacement ignition assembly on top of everything else. My version left his truck exactly as it was, just with a working key again. The dealer comparison didn't even come up -- he was just glad to drive home.
