A rideshare driver in Thousand Oaks, out near North Ranch Open Space, called me from a swap meet parking lot. His 2017 GMC Yukon XL had one key when he bought it used. He always planned to get a spare. Three years later, that one key cracked at the flip hinge and the blade separated from the housing. Remote half in one hand, blade jammed in the ignition. Zero working keys and a truck full of inventory he needed to get home.
The chip inside his broken HYQ1AA was still intact even though the shell was done. I used my VVDI2 to read the transponder data from the cracked fob, which meant I could skip the full all-keys-lost security extraction on the BCM. Saved a good chunk of time.
I extracted the jammed blade from the ignition cylinder, decoded the wafers, and cut two fresh keys. Rebuilt his original fob into a new 5-button shell with the cloned chip, then programmed the second fob through the OBD port. Showed him the old chip so he could see it was still good, just living in a destroyed house.
He went from zero working keys to two in about 40 minutes. The whole time he kept looking at the swap meet tables like someone was going to walk off with his stuff. Once both fobs locked and unlocked from across the lot, he finally relaxed.
He'd called the dealer first. They wanted way more and a tow. He drove home instead.
