1995 Honda Del Sol
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a car this old?

A well-cut key on a healthy cylinder can last as long as you own the car. The metal blade itself is not the weak point. What shortens key life on a Del Sol this age is the cylinder condition. If the wafers inside are worn or corroded, even a perfect key will start feeling sloppy or sticky within a year. If the key turns but feels like it's grinding slightly, that is the cylinder talking, not the key.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me and I come back. On a mechanical key that means something in the cut or the cylinder, and I will sort it out. The most common post-job issue on older Hondas is a cylinder that was already borderline. The new key works at first, then the cylinder tightens up as temperature changes or the wafers shift.

Q: My Del Sol key turns but the car won't start. Is that a key problem?

On a 1995 Del Sol, if the key turns and the engine cranks but does not fire, the key itself is almost certainly not the cause. This car has no immobilizer system to block fuel or spark. A crank-no-start on these is usually fuel delivery, ignition components, or a main relay issue. The main relay on Del Sols from this era was a known trouble spot, particularly in hot weather. The car cranks fine and just will not catch.

Q: Can I get a key made without going to the dealer?

Yes, and on a 1995 Del Sol it is about as uncomplicated as key replacement gets. I come to you in Santa Paula, cut the key on site, and you are done. No tow, no appointment, no waiting for parts to be ordered. The dealer route on a car this age often means sourcing a blank through their parts chain, which can take time they may not advertise upfront.

1995 Honda Del Sol Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone out near the Limoneira groves, just east of Santa Paula. He was parked on a dirt access road between the lemon trees, and the key had snapped. Not lost, not locked inside. Snapped, with the broken tip still sitting in the ignition cylinder.

That changes the order of operations. Before I cut anything, I had to pull the broken piece out of the cylinder without damaging the wafers inside. On a car this age, the wafers are already worn smooth and you do not want to force anything. I took my time with it.

Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded the cut right off the lock. His VIN matched what I expected. I cut the replacement blade in the van, checked the depth on the gauge, and had him try it before I called it done. It turned clean, started right up.

He mentioned he had called the dealer earlier in the week just to ask about options. They told him they would need the car towed in, which was not happening on that road, and the wait for a slot was several days out. He found me through a search while he was still sitting there. The whole thing was done in under 40 minutes, on site, for a fraction of what they quoted.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 1995 Del Sol?▼

On a 1995 Del Sol, the key is purely mechanical, so the quality question comes down to the blank itself. I use blanks that match the factory blade profile for this car. The cut has to be accurate in depth and spacing or the key will either not turn at all or it will turn but wear the cylinder faster.
