1996 Honda Del Sol
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 1996 Del Sol actually use?

It's a plain metal key, edge-cut, no remote, no fob, no battery. You put it in the ignition and turn it. That's the whole system. Replacement means cutting a key to fit your specific locks, either from a key code or by decoding the cylinder directly. No programming appointment, no dealer visit for security enrollment, none of that. It's one of the simpler key jobs out there.

Q: What equipment do you use to cut a key for a 1996 Del Sol?

For a mechanical key like this one, the work is in the cutting, not the programming. I carry a professional key cutting machine in the van along with the correct key blank for this vehicle. If the original key is present and still readable, I can duplicate it on the spot. If the key is too worn to copy accurately, I decode the lock cylinder directly and cut from that.

Q: My Del Sol key turns but the car won't start, or it takes multiple tries. Is the key worn out?

Probably, yes. This is one of the most common complaints on Del Sols of this era. The original key wears over time, and so does the ignition cylinder. When the cuts get shallow enough, the wafers inside the cylinder don't fully engage and you get that maddening sometimes-starts, sometimes-doesn't situation. Before assuming it's a bigger ignition problem, get a fresh key cut from the lock code or a cylinder decode.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made if I've lost both copies?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 1996 Del Sol is not the ordeal it would be on a newer vehicle. Since it's a straight mechanical key, I can decode the door lock or ignition cylinder and cut a working key from scratch. No stored key IDs to wipe, no dealer security reset, no tow required. I come to wherever the car is sitting in Santa Paula, decode the lock on site, and cut the key right there.

1996 Honda Del Sol Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was a Friday night near East Area 2 in Santa Paula, and a family was standing outside a taqueria next to a 1996 Del Sol that wasn't going anywhere. Their only key had worn down over the years to the point where it would turn but not catch the ignition cleanly. It worked sometimes. That night it didn't.

They'd been trying it for twenty minutes before they called me.

I was close. When I got there, the key was so worn it was barely readable, but the lock cylinder still had enough life in it to decode. I pulled the code, cut a fresh replacement right there on the van, and it turned over clean on the first try.

The dad said he'd been putting off getting a spare for two years. I cut him one while I was there anyway.

They drove home that night instead of leaving the car until Monday. Dealer would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill that made them wince. That's not how a Friday night should end.

Honda Del Sol Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to watch for: they won't give you a firm price for your specific vehicle over the phone, they show up in an unmarked car with no visible branding, and they push cash-only with no written estimate. Scam operations have been documented showing up, drilling locks that didn't need drilling, and demanding far more than the phone quote once the work is already started.
