Got a call on a Friday night from someone near the Glen Tavern Inn in Santa Paula. They had a 1996 Honda Del Sol that would not start, and they were pretty sure the key was the problem.
When I got there, about 15 minutes out, I could see the issue right away. The key was worn smooth on one side. Not a little worn. I mean the cuts were so rounded you could barely tell where one valley ended and the next started. The owner said it had been getting harder to turn for months. I decoded the lock cylinder on the driver door to get the original bitting, then cut a fresh HD103 blank to factory spec on my mobile machine. The new key slid into the ignition and turned like the car was brand new. He just sat there and turned it on and off a couple times, like he forgot starting a car was supposed to be that easy.
No chip to program, no computer to talk to, no fob to pair. The Del Sol is about as simple as it gets. One clean-cut mechanical key and you are driving. He asked what a dealer would charge and how long he would wait. I told him he probably would not enjoy the answer. He drove home that night.
