2002 Honda Passport Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in Pierpont on a Tuesday morning, parked a block off the beach, when a guy flagged me down from across the street. Turned out he lived a few houses in from the water and had just snapped his only key for his 2002 Passport. Half the blade was still in his hand. The other half was wedged in the door lock.

He'd already tried to fish it out himself with a pen cap. That never works, and it usually makes it worse. It had pushed the broken piece a little deeper.

I extracted the broken blade from the door cylinder without pulling the lock, which saved him the longer job. Once it was out I had both pieces, which actually helped because the cut pattern was still readable. I decoded it right there, cut a new key blade on my machine in the van, and confirmed the fit in every lock and the ignition before I called it done.

He mentioned a shop had quoted him a two-day turnaround because they wanted to order a key from a supplier. I had him back inside his house and his car running in under an hour. Dealer didn't even come up.

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, and it's one of the more common calls on older Hondas. The Passport shares its lock hardware with other vehicles from that era, and after twenty-plus years the keys wear down and can snap under normal turning pressure, especially if someone forced a stiff cylinder. The process is extraction first, then a new key. I use purpose-built extraction tools to pull the broken piece without damaging the cylinder. Once it's out, I can decode the cut from the broken piece itself or from the lock, and cut a fresh key on site. If the cylinder took damage during the break or from a previous extraction attempt, that's a separate conversation, but most of the time the lock is fine and the whole job is done in one visit.
