Got a call from a guy near the Ventura Music Hall who worked nights stocking shelves at the big box store off the main lot. His 2002 Passport had a replacement key another locksmith made about a week earlier. Worked fine at first, then started failing. Engine would crank but not turn over. I pulled his existing key and read the chip with my VVDI2. The other locksmith had programmed a standard Honda ID13 transponder. Wrong chip entirely. The 2002 Passport runs an Isuzu-sourced immobilizer that expects an ID46 (PCF7936). An ID13 can sometimes squeak past the initial handshake, but once the system runs its deeper rolling verification over a few drive cycles, it stops accepting it. That is exactly what happened here.
Cut a fresh ISU5 blade to code and programmed a real ID46 chip matched to his immobilizer module. Tested it across multiple restarts, cold and warm. No hesitation.
His old key looked right, felt right, and even worked right for eight days. The difference between a key that lasts and one that fails on you in a parking lot at midnight is the chip generation inside it. That part is invisible, and it is everything.
