The Y159 ignition cylinder on Liberty, older Grand Cherokee, and Wrangler models wears down over time, especially with heavy keychains hanging off the key. The wafers loosen, the key starts catching, and eventually the owner thinks the whole ignition needs replacing.
An electrician at the oil change shop in Santa Paula had been fighting his 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee ignition for weeks. Then I decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. His Fobik remote, FCC ID , paired right back up through OBD. I showed him the old wafers so he could see the wear.
Total was 129. Ignition turns smooth, key slides in clean, and he didn't replace anything that wasn't actually broken.
