Got a call from an electrician at the oil change place near Oxnard Beach Park. His 2023 Wagoneer wouldn't recognize the key fob half the time.
Started simple: pulled the CR2450, tested at 2.8V. Borderline but not dead. The real issue showed up when I connected my Autel IM608 Pro II with the XP400 Pro. Gateway wouldn't authenticate. This is the new Stellantis wall that locks out most tools.
Switched to my AutoProPAD with the authenticated gateway module. Got in, ran the diagnostics, found stored code B1A87-13 for RF Hub internal failure. The RF receiver behind the rearview mirror was dropping signal intermittently. Not the key, not the battery, but the receiver module that talks to the fob.
I programmed a new M3NWXF0B1 as a test. Same intermittent detection. That confirmed the RF hub issue. Showed him the diagnostic report with the failure code so he knew exactly what to tell the dealer under warranty.
He thought he needed a new $400 key. Turned out he needed a warranty repair that wouldn't cost him anything. Sometimes the best fix is knowing when not to fix it yourself.
