Got a call from a guy in East Ventura neighborhood. He had just landed after a work trip overseas, walked up to level 3 of the airport garage, and his 2017 Optima was dead to the fob. No chirp, no door unlock, nothing. Trunk wouldn't pop either, and that's where his carry-on was sitting with the emergency insert blade tucked inside.
He tried holding the fob to the door handle. Tried pressing every button. Nothing. The CR2032 was completely flat.

I got to the garage in about 40 minutes. Picked the door open, sat in the driver seat, and plugged my IM608 II into the OBD port on the lower dash. The system confirmed both of his smart keys were still registered to the SMARTRA3 immobilizer module. No faults stored on the BCM besides low fob battery. The SY5JFFGE04 wasn't broken. It was just dead.
New CR2032, cleared the fault code, tested all four buttons at range plus the push-button start. Walked both door handles to confirm the proximity unlock was picking up the fob again.
He drove home that same morning instead of waiting two more days and arranging a tow. Cost him a fraction of what the dealer plus tow truck route would have run.
