2020 Kia Optima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in the Hollywood Beach area of Oxnard?

I give you a real arrival window when you call, based on where I am and what's already on the schedule. Being mobile means I'm usually already out in the area, not waiting at a shop. Kia Roadside Assistance, based on what owners report, can run 90 minutes or more just to arrive. Dealers need an appointment, and some Optima owners have described waits of a week or longer before they can even get in. Call and ask.

Q: Can I get a replacement smart key made the same day I call?

In most cases, yes. I carry fob stock and programming tools for the 2020 Optima in the service van. If the schedule has room and I have your key on hand, same-day service at your location in Hollywood Beach or anywhere in Oxnard is the normal outcome, not the exception. Dealer timelines are a different story.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2020 Optima. Can it just be programmed, or do I need a specific one?

This comes up a lot. The short answer is: the fob has to match the factory FCC ID for your vehicle. Aftermarket and off-brand fobs sold online sometimes list compatibility broadly, and owners end up with a fob that won't pair no matter what the seller claimed. If you bought one and want to try it, bring it. I can check whether it's the right unit before running the programming sequence.

Q: My Optima shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What's going on?

A few things can cause this even after a battery swap. First, check that the CR2032 is seated flat against both contacts with no tilt. A slightly cocked battery reads as dead to the system. Second, the fob itself can fail at the circuit board level, especially if it's been dropped or got wet.

2020 Kia Optima Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Oxnard near Hollywood Beach, a chiropractor was mid-workday with patients booked back to back. His 2020 Kia Optima smart key had gone quiet overnight. Push-button start wouldn't wake up, the door handles weren't responding to touch, and he had zero gap in his schedule to deal with any of it.

Calling the dealer wasn't an option he could work around. Tow truck during business hours meant abandoning patients. Waiting days for a service slot wasn't happening either.

He found me, and I drove out to his office lot while he was between his noon and one o'clock appointments.

I pulled up, checked the fob battery first out of habit, then plugged into the OBD port and ran the programming sequence using the vehicle's security PIN. The 4-button fob came back fully online. Locked it, unlocked it, walked to the edge of the lot and tested the passive entry on both door handles, then had him put his foot on the brake and confirm the start button.

All of it checked out before he walked back in for his next patient. The car never left the parking spot. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted, and that quote didn't even include the tow he would have needed to get there.

How long does a 2020 Kia Optima smart key replacement take?▼

Most of the time, plan for 30 to 45 minutes from when I arrive. The 2020 Optima smart key requires diagnostic equipment to register the fob to the immobilizer, and that process includes a security PIN retrieval step before programming begins. It is not a long job, but it has a sequence that can't be skipped. Once programming completes, I test all four buttons, touch unlock on the door handles, and start function before I hand it over.
