2020 Kia Telluride Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was parked near the Marina West waterfront when the call came in. Owner of a small record shop, lot just off the main strip in Oxnard. He had a 2020 Telluride, one working key, and a specific question before I even pulled up: was an aftermarket fob actually going to be as good as the dealer key, or was he paying for a problem down the road?
That's a fair question and it deserves a real answer, not a sales pitch.
I carry aftermarket smart key blanks I've sourced and tested across a lot of Kia jobs. The thing with aftermarket is that quality isn't universal. A blank from a reliable supplier cuts and programs identically to OEM, holds up to daily use, and the proximity detection behaves the same. A cheap blank from a bad supplier cracks at the seam inside of six months, or the circuit board has inconsistent range that makes you think something's wrong with the car. I test every batch before it goes in the van. I'm the one who catches the problem at my workbench, not in the customer's driveway.
I showed him the blank, walked him through what the programming process looks like, and did the job right there on his lot. Cut the blade to his vehicle, paired the fob through the diagnostic port, and tested every button including the door handles and the start button with the fob at arm's length and then across the lot.
His question at the end was whether there was a Kia logo on the back. There wasn't. Everything else was the same. He said he could live with that, especially after I told him what the dealer quoted for OEM.
He got a working spare for daily carry. I got back on the road before his next customer walked in.
