Out in Oxnard Shores, a guy flagged me down in the parking area near the water. He had his 2023 Telluride, a 5-button smart key, and a problem he'd been fighting for two days: intermittent start. Sometimes the push-button would see the fob. Sometimes it would throw a key-not-detected warning and just sit there.
He'd already put in a new battery. Still doing it.
I asked him what battery he used. He pulled out the old one. CR2032. Someone at the parts counter had handed it to him without checking, and he trusted it. The Telluride takes a CR2450, which is physically thicker. The CR2032 was rattling around inside the housing, making contact only when the fob sat at a specific angle.
Swapped in the correct CR2450, reseated it, and checked the contact clips for any spread from the undersized cell sitting in there.
Then the part that matters: I didn't hand it back and call it done. I walked the perimeter of his Telluride. Tested the door handle proximity sensors on both front doors. Tested lock and unlock from 30 feet. Ran three consecutive starts. Checked that the vehicle recognized the fob through the glass when the battery is low, which is the backup method if this ever happens again.
Everything came back clean. No programming needed, no new key required. He'd already been quoted a replacement key at the dealer. That quote was going to cost him a significant amount more than what I charged him.
The fix was a $3 battery and knowing which one to buy.
