Out in Ormond Beach, off Wooley Road near the industrial end, a guy who worked warehouse shifts flagged me down in a parking lot off his break. He'd already paid another locksmith for a replacement fob for his 2022 Telluride. It worked for about a week and a half. Then it started doing something specific: fine in the morning, dead by evening. Push-to-start would flash a key-not-detected warning on the dash, and he'd have to hold the fob right against the start button to coax the car into recognizing it.
He thought the car was developing an electrical problem. His coworkers were telling him to take it to Kia. He'd already been quoted a number at the dealer that made him go quiet when he repeated it to me.
I pulled out the fob the other locksmith had cut and programmed. The blade looked right. But when I checked the programming, the key had been paired with the wrong transponder chip generation. That's the thing about Kia's security system on these newer models - a close-but-wrong chip can clear the initial handshake and seem like it's working. Then over a few drive cycles, the system runs deeper verification and the mismatch starts showing up. It doesn't fail all at once. It fails gradually, which is exactly why he thought it was the car and not the key.
I erased the bad key, retrieved the PIN by VIN, and programmed a new fob with the correct chip generation. While I had the fob open, I also swapped the CR2032, which was reading low. Ran through the full check: lock, unlock, proximity detection from across the lot, and start button response with the fob inside his bag.
It's been solid since. He didn't need a dealer appointment, a tow, or a week without his car. He needed the right chip the first time.
