Marina West Park job had me looking at a 2022 Telluride with a twist. The owner's teenager had ordered a replacement fob online after losing the spare. Kid watched a YouTube video, thought he could program it himself.
The aftermarket key looked perfect. Right button layout, correct FCC ID marking. But when he held it to the start button like the video said, nothing. No beep, no recognition, just silence. Then his working key started acting up too, like the car got confused.
I plugged in and pulled codes. P1693 for "Invalid Smart Key" was stored. The aftermarket fob had the wrong chip revision. These need NCF29A1X, not the older NCF29A1M that floods the online market. The car's immobilizer had partially accepted the bad key data, which was messing with the good key's authentication.
Clear stored keys through Autel IM608, wait for the system reset, then register both fobs fresh. The original key came back to life immediately. For the aftermarket one, I swapped in the correct chip and blade cut. Twenty minutes total.
The dealer wanted the car for two days minimum. Their process involves ordering keys through GLOVIS, which can take a week if they're out of stock locally.
