I got a call from a guy out in Nyeland Acres who had watched one of my videos before he ever had a problem. He'd seen a Kia job on my channel, noted how the process worked, and saved my number. Smart move, because when his 2021 Telluride started throwing a key-not-detected warning the week before a road trip, he didn't waste time going back and forth with the dealer.
He told me it had started acting up two days earlier. Some button presses worked, some didn't. The range had dropped to basically arm's length. He figured it was the battery and swapped it himself. Still flaky.
When I pulled up, I sat with the fob before doing anything else. New CR2032 he'd put in, but the contact clip on the negative side had a slight bow to it, probably from how the back cover was pried off. The battery was making contact, but not clean contact. I straightened the clip, cleaned the contact surfaces, reseated the battery, and snapped the cover back correctly. Then I walked every function. Lock, unlock, and each of the other three buttons, one at a time, from normal distance. Then from the gate at the end of the parking area. Everything responded clean.
He asked if he still needed a new fob. He didn't. The fob hardware was fine. It just needed the contact set right and a clean battery seat.
That is the kind of thing that gets missed when someone hands off a car without looking at it first. I check before I replace. That is the whole job sometimes.
