I was working an Upper East job on a Tuesday when a second call came in. A woman parked off Arrellaga had walked out to her 2006 LR3 and got nothing. Not a weak remote, not a slow crank. Just nothing useful happening when she put the key in.
She had already done the obvious thing. New CR2032, installed correctly, remote working fine. But the car still wouldn't start. She figured it was the battery or something unrelated to the key. It wasn't.
When I got there she handed me the fob and I could feel it before I even looked closely. The flip blade had play in it, real play, not just the normal wear you see on these. The pivot pin had backed out just enough that the blade wasn't seating fully into the ignition barrel. The transponder was present but the geometry was off, and the barrel wasn't reading it cleanly.
I sourced a replacement flip key shell with a solid pivot, transferred the transponder, cut a new blade to match, and ran the programming sequence through the OBD port. Took about 45 minutes parked right there on the street. She tested it herself three times before I packed up.
The dealer quote she had gotten before calling me was steep and came with a parts-order wait attached. She ended up paying a fraction of that, same day, at her car.
