Got a call from a guy down in the Funk Zone in Santa Barbara. He had a 2009 LR3 HSE parked near one of the wine tasting rooms and his only flip key had snapped at the pivot. The blade was still in the ignition, the plastic shell was in two pieces on the floorboard, and he was holding the circuit board and CR2032 battery like evidence at a crime scene.
He had already called the Land Rover dealer. They told him the key had to be ordered through JLR, quoted him over a week, and said to have the car towed in. He was visiting from out of town. A week was not an option.
I got there in under an hour. Pulled the broken blade tip out of the ignition cylinder with a small extractor, then set up on his passenger seat. Cut a new HU101 blade on the flip key blank, transferred his original PCF7945 chip data, and programmed the new key through OBD using the CAS module. The remote frequency on these is 315 MHz, and the on-board pairing procedure is a quick ignition cycle sequence once the transponder side is already registered.
The part that made me laugh: he kept the broken shell pieces. Said he wanted to remember what not having a spare key felt like. Whole thing took maybe 35 minutes. He drove off to his next tasting.
