I was parked near Stearns Wharf on a Tuesday, wrapping up another job, when a call came in from someone who'd been walking the waterfront trying to figure out what to do with a 2008 LR3 that wouldn't acknowledge the key.
He'd already tried the obvious stuff. New battery. Re-seating the battery. Holding the fob closer to the start button. A key-not-detected warning kept coming up, and when it did work, it was inconsistent -- start the car, fine. Come back an hour later, nothing.
I drove over and found him near the lot off Cabrillo. First thing I did was open the fob and look at the battery contacts, not the battery. One contact had a slight inward bow, just enough that the CR2032 wasn't making solid contact on every surface when the fob got warm in his pocket. Classic. Fixed the contact, seated a fresh cell, and it cleared up immediately.
But while I had the fob apart I also noticed the flip blade pivot was loose -- just slightly, but enough that the blade was creating a micro-gap at the hilt. On these fobs that mechanical slop eventually causes the blade to misread in the ignition barrel, which adds another layer of intermittent behavior on top of any electronic issue.
We tested everything: remote lock and unlock from distance, ignition start, a couple of cold relocks. Solid every time. He'd been quoted a full key replacement at the dealer and was already mentally prepared to wait two weeks for parts. He didn't need any of that. Took about 25 minutes parked right there off the wharf, for a fraction of what the dealer had in mind.
He asked if I wanted to grab coffee. I had another call, but I appreciated it.
