Got a call from a guy in the San Roque neighborhood in Santa Barbara. His 2008 LR3 HSE had one working flip key left, and the remote buttons on it had gone dead a week earlier. He was locking and unlocking with the blade, old school. Said he had been calling the Land Rover dealer and they told him the key had to be ordered from JLR in the UK, two to four weeks before it even showed up, then another appointment after that to program it.
He did not want to wait. I got it.
I pulled up, popped my kit on his tailgate, and got to work. Cut the new NT8-15K6014CFFTXA blade to his lock, then connected through the OBD-II port under the dash to talk to the KVM. Wrote the Hitag2 transponder, synced the three-button remote, and had the new key turning the engine over in about 25 minutes.
Then I looked at his old key. Opened it up on the spot. The CR2032 had leaked just enough to leave a film on one of the battery contacts. Cleaned it, dropped in a fresh cell, re-synced the remote. Both keys working, full remote range.
He stood there holding two functioning keys like he had forgotten what that felt like. Said he had been putting off the dealer trip for months because of the wait time and the hassle of getting the truck there on one dying key.
Whole visit, maybe 40 minutes. He never left his driveway.
