2020 Lincoln Corsair
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

Your 2020 Corsair uses a proximity-style smart fob - the factory fob with five buttons and a CR2450 battery. There's also a physical emergency blade stored inside the fob for situations where the battery dies completely. The fob communicates with the vehicle's security system wirelessly, and the car has to recognize that specific registered fob before it will authorize starting. That recognition process happens at the vehicle level, which is why cutting a new key blade alone isn't enough.

Q: How long does the dealer usually take for a Lincoln key replacement, and is it really that much slower?

In practice, longer than it should be. Lincoln owners on forums regularly describe multi-week waits just to get a programming appointment at the dealer, and that's before the actual work starts. The vehicle security system has a timed security access sequence built into the programming procedure, which adds time on top of whatever the service writer's schedule looks like. Some owners report the dealer needing to order the fob separately, which can push it into a multi-day or multi-visit situation.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2020 Corsair. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2020 Corsair does not have a DIY self-programming sequence for the smart fob. There's no ignition-turn trick or button combo that enrolls a new fob into the vehicle security system. Programming requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port. If you already bought a fob online, that's fine - as long as it matches the factory FCC ID on your original fob, I can program it on site.

Q: My Corsair's door handle touch-unlock is inconsistent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Is the fob going bad?

Not necessarily. Corsair owners bring this one up fairly often. The touch-sensitive area on the door handle is separate from the fob itself - if the start button still recognizes the key and the lock and unlock buttons on the fob work reliably, the fob is probably fine. Inconsistent handle response tends to point to the handle sensor or something in that door's wiring rather than the key. Worth checking whether it's one door or both.

2020 Lincoln Corsair Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in the Sea Air neighborhood of Oxnard on a Tuesday morning. She had a 2020 Lincoln Corsair and one key.

Not because she lost one - she never had a second. The dealer gave her one fob at delivery, she never pushed for a spare, and it stayed that way for a couple of years. Then she dropped it in a parking lot and something inside shifted. The fob would lock the doors sometimes. Start the car sometimes. Other times the dash would throw a key-not-detected warning and she'd have to hold the fob directly against the start button to get it going.

She had already called the dealer. The wait for a programming appointment was pushing three weeks, and they needed the car dropped off, which meant arranging a ride both ways. She wasn't interested in that.

I pulled up to her place with my programming unit. The original fob had a cracked battery contact from the drop - that explained the intermittent behavior. We cut and programmed a new key on site, registered it alongside the original so she'd have two working fobs going forward, and I confirmed both would start the car before I packed up.

The whole visit ran about 40 minutes. She mentioned what the dealer had quoted her and just shook her head. I told her the technology in the key is real, but traveling to a service bay and waiting three weeks for it isn't a requirement.

Lincoln Corsair Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Lincoln dealer to get a replacement key for my 2020 Corsair?▼

No. A qualified mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement smart key for the 2020 Corsair on site. The Corsair's vehicle security system uses the same programming architecture found across the Ford-Lincoln lineup, and professional-grade key programming tools handle it through the OBD port. Dealers do have access to the same process - they just also have the overhead, the appointment wait, and the service-bay markup that goes with it.
