Got a call from a guy over near Topa Topa Brewing Company in Oxnard. His 2006 CLS500 had one working key left and the remote buttons had quit on it months ago. He had been manually inserting the key to start and using the door lock cylinder every day. Lived with it.
Then the plastic housing cracked and he started worrying about losing the transponder chip inside. Fair worry.
I pulled up, popped his old key open on the hood, and showed him the problem. The CR2025 was not just dead, it had leaked a little and corroded one of the battery contacts inside the 5WK47283 housing. That is why the remote died. The transponder side still worked because it is passive, powered by the EIS reader coil when you insert the key.
Cut a new remote head key blank, paired the transponder through the OBD port to the EIS module, and programmed the four-button IR remote. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Then I erased his damaged old key from the system so it could not start the car if someone found it later.
He stood there clicking the remote at the doors like he was rediscovering his own car. Said he forgot the trunk button even existed.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes on site. Way less than what the dealer wanted, and he did not have to leave the parking lot.
