Got a call around 9:45 on a Thursday night from a guy over in the Lang Ranch neighborhood in Thousand Oaks. His 2014 CLS 550 was sitting in the driveway, and his only key had stopped doing anything. Remote buttons dead, insert key, turn, nothing. Dash just sat there dark.
He had already called the Mercedes dealer in Encino. Closed. Called another one. Also closed. Found my number and asked if I was actually going to answer at this hour. I told him I would be there in about 40 minutes.
When I got there, I pulled the key apart on his kitchen counter. The CR2025 was corroded around one edge, and the battery clip inside the IYZ-3312 housing had a greenish film on it. Cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2025, reassembled. Remote buttons came back right away. But the car still would not crank.
Connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port and read the EIS. The key's transponder profile was still stored in the EIS but flagged with a communication error. Re-synced the key to the EIS module, cleared the fault, and the engine turned over on the first try. Tested all four buttons, cycled the ignition three times, locked and unlocked from 30 feet out.
Whole thing took maybe 35 minutes. He said the dealer had quoted him a week just to get a new key shipped in. He did not need a new key. He needed someone who would show up at 10 PM with the right equipment.
