Got a call from a guy stuck out near Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura. His 2010 CLS550 had two keys when he bought it used. One went through the wash. The other had been acting up for weeks, sometimes needing three or four tries in the EIS slot before the dash would wake up.
By the time he called me, the surviving key was barely working. He would insert it, get nothing on the instrument cluster, pull it out, reinsert. Sometimes it would catch. Sometimes it sat there dead.
I pulled the key apart on his hood. The IR emitter lens on the key blade housing had a film of pocket lint and grime baked onto it. The battery contacts inside were corroded from that CR2025 slowly leaking. Cleaned the IR lens, swapped the battery, and the original key started hitting first try again.
Then I cut and programmed a fresh replacement on the second EIS slot so he would have a backup. Read the EIS with my diagnostic setup, matched the transponder data, and the new 5WK47283 fired the car right up. Tested both keys back to back, locks, trunk, panic, ignition. All solid.
He had been looking at the dealer route. They quoted him weeks of wait time because the key gets ordered by VIN from Germany. I was done in about 40 minutes, parked next to a lake. He saved a good chunk over what they wanted.
