Got a call from a guy near Ventura River Preserve who had been carrying his 2011 CLS key in a Ziploc bag. Not kidding. The chrome shell had peeled so badly that little flakes were getting into his pocket, and he was worried metal bits would scratch the ignition slot. He had already called the dealer and they told him the key had to be ordered from Germany, two to three weeks minimum, plus a programming appointment after that.
He found me online and asked if I could just fix the shell.
I pulled the key apart on his kitchen counter. The 5WK47283 board inside was perfect. Transponder chip healthy, IR emitter working, CR2025 still testing strong. The whole problem was literally the housing falling apart around a good key.
Swapped the board and blade into a new aftermarket shell. Tested IR communication to the EIS, ran all four buttons, started the car twice, cycled the locks. Everything normal.
He kept turning the new key over in his hand like he was waiting for the chrome to peel off again. I told him the aftermarket shells actually hold up better because they skip that decorative chrome layer that Mercedes puts on.
No programming, no dealer visit, no weeks of waiting. Just a shell swap done on site in about fifteen minutes. He threw the Ziploc bag away.
