Got a call from a guy in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks. His 2013 CLS550 was sitting in the driveway, totally dead to the key. Remote worked fine from across the yard. Doors locked, unlocked, trunk popped. But slide the key into the ignition slot and nothing. Dash lit up, then the steering lock indicator came on and the engine refused to turn over.
He had already called the Mercedes dealer. They told him to tow it in, leave it, and wait for a diagnostic appointment that was about two weeks out. Then the key itself would need to be ordered by VIN from Germany, which could add another week or more on top of that.
I drove out and ran diagnostics through the OBD port. The EIS was reading his key just fine. Transponder ID matched, no fault on the key side. The problem was the ESL, the electronic steering lock module. It had locked up mechanically and wouldn't release, so the EIS never sent the start signal to the engine module.
Repaired the ESL on site, cleared the fault codes, and his original key started the car like nothing happened.
He sat on the front step the whole time, watching. When it cranked he just said, "That's it?" That was it. His key was never the problem. Saved him a tow, a long wait, and a part he did not need.
