2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Does my 2000 Montero Sport have to go to the dealer for a replacement key?

No. Mitsubishi dealers will push you toward towing the vehicle in, especially with no working key, and their scheduling isn't always fast. The Mitsubishi dealer network is thinner than most brands, so depending on where you are in Ventura County, the nearest one could mean a long tow on top of the key cost. We handle the 2000 Montero Sport key on site. Same result, no tow, no drop-off, and you're not leaving your vehicle somewhere overnight.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and something showing ownership, like your registration or title. We also confirm the VIN from the dash plate or door jamb sticker on your Montero Sport before we start. That verification step is standard whether you go to a dealer or call a mobile locksmith.

Q: I have one working key for my 2000 Montero Sport. Can I get a spare made before I lose it?

That's the right call. Adding a spare while you still have a working key is faster and simpler than dealing with an all-keys-lost situation. On the 2000 Montero Sport, the transponder programming sequence is easier when at least one functional key is already registered to the system.

Q: My 2000 Montero Sport starts fine with my key but the engine cuts out a few seconds later. Is the transponder failing?

That start-then-stall pattern often points to the transponder signal not being read cleanly by the immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. On a vehicle this age, the antenna ring itself can degrade or the wiring to it can work loose over time. Before assuming the key is bad, check whether the key works consistently or only sometimes. An intermittent read is usually a hardware issue at the ignition collar, not a failed chip in the key.

2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to a motel off Wagon Wheel in Oxnard on a weeknight. Guy was on a road trip, his only key to his 2000 Montero Sport had snapped at the base of the blade, right where the plastic head meets the metal. The blade was stuck in the door lock. The car wasn't going anywhere.

He'd already called the dealer. They wanted him to tow it in, said they could fit him in the next day, and the quote was vague enough that he knew it was going to hurt. He didn't want to pay for a tow on top of whatever the key cost. He found me online and figured he'd try the mobile route first.

I got there with my extraction tools, pulled the broken blade out of the lock cylinder without damaging the tumbler, and cut a fresh key blank to match. The 2000 Montero Sport uses a transponder, so after the cut I connected to the OBD port and programmed the new key to the immobilizer with his existing working key count confirmed. The whole job, from extraction to a fully programmed key that started the engine, took under an hour in the motel parking lot.

He made it to his next stop that night. The dealer comparison came up on its own when he asked what it would have cost the other way. I just told him the tow alone would have eaten most of what he paid me total.
