2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call on a Tuesday morning from a student parked near Via Marina in Oxnard. She had the 2002 Montero Sport and the key had snapped at the base of the blade, right where the plastic head meets the metal. The blade was still in the ignition cylinder.
That last part was the actual problem. Not the missing key half sitting in her hand, but the piece still stuck inside. She'd already tried a flathead, tried a bobby pin, and was one bad move away from pushing it in deeper.
I drove out to the lot, extracted the broken blade without damaging the ignition, and got a look at what we were working with. The transponder chip in the plastic head was still good, which mattered. For these older Mitsubishi transponder setups, the programming process works through the OBD port. I cut a new blade to match the vehicle, transferred the job to a new key head, got connected, and ran the registration sequence. Then the part that actually tells you everything worked: key in, engine turns over, no stall, no security light sitting on.
The whole thing was done in about 40 minutes from when I parked my van. She'd already called the nearest Mitsubishi dealer before she called me. They couldn't see her until Friday and she'd need a tow because the broken blade wasn't going anywhere on its own. She saved a good chunk compared to that route, and she made her afternoon class.
