2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the programming actually take once you're at my car?

On a 2003 Montero Sport, the job is cutting the key blade to the vehicle and enrolling the transponder chip through the OBD port. The whole thing runs well under an hour at the car, usually closer to 20 to 30 minutes depending on whether I'm decoding the lock or working from key data. There's no waiting room, no dispatch layer between you and the tech doing the work. You watch it happen in your driveway.

Q: Can you make a replacement key faster than the dealer?

The programming step itself takes the same amount of time regardless of who does it - the technology doesn't change. What changes is everything around it. No appointment that books out a week, no tow to a dealership across the county, no sitting in a waiting room while the shop works through three other jobs first. We come to you, do the work, and you're done. Same result, none of the overhead.

Q: My 2003 Montero Sport starts fine with the original key but won't start with a copy I had made. What happened?

That's a chip issue, not a cut issue. A standard key copy from a hardware store or a copy shop duplicates the metal blade perfectly but ignores the transponder chip inside the key head entirely. The ignition cylinder will turn, but the immobilizer won't see an authorized chip and it will kill the start.

Q: I only have one key left for my Montero Sport. Can a locksmith still make a spare, or do I need an all-keys-lost procedure?

One working key makes the job easier, not harder. As long as that key still starts the vehicle, I can decode the blade, cut a matching spare, and add it to the system. No all-keys-lost reset needed. All-keys-lost is a different situation - that's when there are no working keys at all, which takes more time and tooling.

2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Oxnard, near The Collection, I got a call from a woman who had been running on one key for her 2003 Montero Sport for the better part of two years. She worked two jobs. The kids had school every morning. There was never a good window to deal with a dealer trip, especially when the nearest Mitsubishi dealer isn't exactly around the corner.

She wasn't in crisis. The key still worked. But she knew she was one bad day away from being completely stuck, and that thought had been sitting in the back of her head every time she dropped the keys in a parking lot.

I came out before her morning shift. She stayed in the house while I set up in the driveway. Decoded the lock, cut a fresh key to match, and programmed the transponder chip through the OBD port. Both keys tested clean - turned over, held the start, no warning lights on the dash. I handed her the spare and she was back inside grabbing her bag before the coffee finished brewing.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her for a single key. My price for two came in at a fraction of that, and she didn't burn a half day getting there.

Mitsubishi Montero Sport Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my Montero Sport after hours or on a weekend?▼

Mitsubishi's dealer network in Ventura County is thin, and service departments don't keep late hours. Lose your key on a Saturday night or a Sunday morning and you're looking at waiting until Monday, minimum, plus whatever tow costs come with it. We work outside dealer hours. One call gets you on the schedule, often same evening or first thing the next morning, right at your location in The Collection or wherever the vehicle is sitting in Oxnard.
