I got a call out there from someone who had already spent two weeks going back and forth with the dealership over a 2009 Volvo V50 key that was behaving badly. The fob would lock the car fine, then refuse to unlock it. Sometimes it would unlock on the third press, sometimes not at all. That's the thing about these larger cells: they lie on a simple voltage check. I swapped in a fresh CR2450, seated it correctly, and cleaned the contacts.

Tested every one of the five buttons, did three cold starts, walked the distance out to check range front and rear. Everything was working. The intermittent unlock issue was gone.

He had already mentally budgeted for a module replacement. What he actually needed was a battery done right and someone who knew what to test afterward. He drove off looking a little relieved and a little annoyed at the two weeks he'd spent on it before calling.
