Got a call from a V50 owner near Ventura City Hall. She had one working key left and a second one that had been dropping signal for months. She finally stopped using it, tossed it in a drawer, and forgot about it. Then the working key took a swim in a water bottle inside her bag.
She fished it out fast, dried it off, and the car started once. Next morning, nothing. Dashboard lit up, immobilizer light stayed solid, engine would not crank. Classic CEM rejection.
I pulled up, connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port, and read the CEM. Water had corrupted the transponder's handshake with the module. The physical blade was fine, the five-button shell with FCC ID KR55WK49250 looked okay on the outside, but the PCB inside had minor corrosion on the antenna coil trace. Not repairable in a way I'd trust long term.
Cut a new blade to her lock code. Programmed a fresh remote head key through the CEM's security routine, which on P1 Volvos means reading the EEPROM, extracting the PIN, and writing the new key slot. Then I grabbed that drawer key, opened it up, put a fresh CR2450 in, and programmed it too so she'd have a backup.
Tested both keys. Every button, remote range across the parking area, three clean starts each. She stood there holding two working keys for the first time in over a year. The whole thing took about 90 minutes on site, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted her over the phone.
