I lost all my Volvo V50 keys. Can you still make a new one?

The V50 runs its immobilizer through the central electronics module. On an all-keys-lost job, there are no existing working keys to use as a reference, so the process involves accessing that module through the diagnostic port, reading the security data, and then generating and registering a new key against what we pull from the module. The key blade also gets cut from scratch, either from code or by decoding the lock directly.

How long does an all-keys-lost job take on the V50?

The V50's security system requires a specific sequence: reading the module data, generating the key credentials, cutting the blade, and running the registration routine. Each step has to complete cleanly before the next one starts, and the programming sequence itself has a timed component built into it.

Dealers quote a similar labor window, but that clock doesn't start until the key physically arrives, which can take days or run longer depending on inventory. We show up with the key blank and cut it on site, so the whole job happens in one visit.

My V50 fob works for locking and unlocking but the car won't start. The dash shows a key warning. What's going on?

This is a known split-symptom pattern on these cars. The remote functions of the fob run on the fob battery. The immobilizer function runs on a separate signal that gets read when the key is in the ignition. If that signal is weak or not reading properly, you can have a fob that controls the doors just fine while the car still refuses to start and throws a key-not-detected warning on the dash.

A few things can cause this: a worn key, an issue with the ignition reader, or a problem in the central electronics module not recognizing the key's credentials even though it was previously registered. It's worth having the key and the system both checked before assuming you need a full replacement. Sometimes the key just needs to be re-registered. Sometimes it's a reader issue. Either way, it's diagnosable.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

Not on this vehicle. The 2011 V50 requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob to the immobilizer. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works here. If you buy a fob online, you still need someone with the right tools to pair it to your specific car before it will do anything beyond sit in your hand.
