A guy in Santaluz called me on a Tuesday morning. He had one key left for his 2001 MDX and the remote had stopped responding. Locks, unlock, nothing. The key still turned in the ignition, the truck started fine, but he was doing the parking-lot walk every time he needed to know if he actually locked it.
He figured the battery was dead. He was right about that part. But when he swapped the CR2025 himself, the remote still did nothing. That is usually one of two things: a bent contact tab from a rough battery swap, or the fob lost its pairing and needs to be re-registered to the vehicle.
I pulled into his driveway off the main road, popped the fob open on my tailgate and checked the board. Contact tab looked okay, no corrosion. Fresh CR2025 seated correctly. Still nothing on the remote.
That told me it had dropped its pairing, which happens on these occasionally after the battery goes fully dead. Plugged into the OBD port, ran the registration sequence, and walked every button: lock, unlock, the rear hatch. All three came back clean.
He asked if he should get a spare cut at the same time. I told him honestly, for a 23-year-old vehicle with one key left, yes. We cut a second blade and enrolled that one while I was already connected. Good call on his part.
He never asked what the dealer would have charged. But I know what those service desks look like for a job like this, and it was not close.
