A guy called me from a hotel parking lot off the main corridor in Escondido. He was in town for a wedding, flew in from out of state, had one fob for his 2018 MDX, and somewhere between the hotel room and the reception it was gone. Not misplaced. Gone. The hotel staff had pointed him toward the Acura dealer, and the dealer was closed until Monday. His flight home was Sunday afternoon.
The thing about all-keys-lost on a push-button MDX is that the car isn't broken. It just has no record of any authorized fob. The immobilizer is doing exactly what it's supposed to do, which is refuse to wake up for anything it doesn't recognize. Getting past that requires diagnostic equipment that can access the vehicle security system, clear the existing key data, and write new fob credentials. You can't charm your way around it with a button sequence.
I pulled into the lot, set up at the rear of my van, and walked him through what was about to happen while I got the tools ready. Pulled the immobilizer data as a backup first, then ran the all-keys-lost sequence through the OBD port. New fob, factory FCC ID matching his original, five buttons, CR2032 seated correctly. Tested every function against the vehicle before I called it done.
He started his MDX in that parking lot a little after 9 p.m. Made the wedding after-party. Made his flight.
The dealer route would have stranded him two extra days and cost him a lot more. He didn't say much when the engine turned over. Just stood there for a second, then nodded like he was deciding whether to believe it.
