My MDX has no working key at all. Do I have to tow it to the dealer?

No. All-keys-lost on a 2005 MDX is a job I handle on site. The process requires programming through the OBD port to register a new key to the vehicle's immobilizer, and I carry the equipment to do that at your location.

The tow route adds cost and complication before the dealer even looks at the car. What do I need to show you to prove I own the vehicle?

My MDX starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the 2005 MDX remote-head key, the transponder that starts the car and the remote that works the locks are two separate functions in the same housing. If the engine runs normally, the transponder side is fine.

First thing to check is the CR2025 battery. These get overlooked because they don't fail dramatically, they just get weak. A low battery can kill remote range entirely while the key still starts the car without any complaint. Swap the battery, make sure it's seated flat against both contacts, and retest all three buttons.

If a fresh battery doesn't bring it back, the issue is usually a cracked circuit board inside the fob from a drop, or corroded contacts. At that point you're looking at a new remote-head key that gets programmed to your vehicle. But start with the battery. It solves this more often than people expect.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2005 MDX. Can I program it myself?

This one depends on what you bought.

The 2005 MDX remote-head key has both a transponder chip and a remote in one unit. The remote portion can sometimes be synced through an onboard procedure if you still have a working key, but the transponder side requires programming equipment connected to the OBD port to register the new key to the immobilizer. You cannot do that part at home with a button sequence.

If you bought a pre-cut, pre-programmed key, it still needs to be enrolled to your specific vehicle. If you bought just a fob shell or a blank, it needs both cutting and programming. Either way, having the right tool on site is what closes the gap between a key you bought and a key that actually works.
