2005 Acura MDX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: My MDX has no working key at all. Do I have to tow it to the dealer?

No. All-keys-lost on a 2005 MDX is a job I handle on site. The process requires programming through the OBD port to register a new key to the vehicle's immobilizer, and I carry the equipment to do that at your location. The tow route adds cost and complication before the dealer even looks at the car. AWD vehicles locked in park without a key need a flatbed or wheel dollies, and that bill hits you before any key work starts.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I also verify the VIN directly off the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on the MDX before any work starts. That step confirms the key specs and matches the vehicle to the owner on record. Same standard a dealer uses, done on site in a parking lot instead of at a parts counter with a multi-hour wait behind it.

Q: My MDX starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the 2005 MDX remote-head key, the transponder that starts the car and the remote that works the locks are two separate functions in the same housing. If the engine runs normally, the transponder side is fine. First thing to check is the CR2025 battery. These get overlooked because they don't fail dramatically, they just get weak. A low battery can kill remote range entirely while the key still starts the car without any complaint.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2005 MDX. Can I program it myself?

This one depends on what you bought. The 2005 MDX remote-head key has both a transponder chip and a remote in one unit. The remote portion can sometimes be synced through an onboard procedure if you still have a working key, but the transponder side requires programming equipment connected to the OBD port to register the new key to the immobilizer. You cannot do that part at home with a button sequence.

2005 Acura MDX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near the Mission San Luis Rey Area, a college student had just bought a used 2005 MDX from a private seller. Good truck, fair price, one key.

The seller told him a spare would be no big deal to get. He called the dealer and came back with a number that made him pause hard. He'd just put most of his savings into the car itself, and he wasn't expecting that.

He found me online and asked if that price was normal. I told him it was, but I could handle the same job for a fraction of what they wanted, because I'm not running a service department with that kind of overhead.

We met between his classes. The MDX uses a remote-head setup, so the transponder chip and the fob buttons are all in one unit. I read the transponder data from his existing key and programmed a fresh blank to match it, then cut the blade to his vehicle using a decode of his door lock. Before I left, I walked him through the difference between add-a-key and all-keys-lost, because that second key he was holding was going to save him real money down the road if he ever lost one.

He drove off with two working keys and didn't miss a class. The dealer conversation was already forgotten.

Acura MDX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out near the Mission San Luis Rey Area with no spare. Can you come to me?▼

Yes, that's the whole point of what I do. I come to wherever your MDX is in Oceanside, tools and key blanks already on the truck. On this generation MDX, getting into the vehicle on-site is the right call anyway. These are AWD trucks, and towing one that's locked in park without a key to shift it requires a flatbed and some coordination that adds time and money to a situation that's already frustrating.
