2002 Acura MDX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in San Diego Country Estates, a woman called me about her 2002 MDX. The key still started the car, but neither of the remote functions had worked in a few months -- no locks, no rear hatch release. She had been walking around to every door manually like it was 1995. She assumed the whole key needed to be replaced and reprogrammed, and someone had already told her to budget for a dealer visit.
I drove out to her place and asked when she last changed the battery. She looked at the key like that was an odd question.
CR2025 out, fresh one in, seated correctly with the contacts clean. Locked the doors from ten feet away on the first press.
She asked if that was really it. I told her yep, that is really it. The transponder chip inside the key head does not run on the fob battery -- it gets its power inductively from the ignition antenna ring when you insert the key. So the car kept starting fine even while the battery was completely dead. The remote was the only thing that suffered.
We still walked through all three buttons and tested the rear hatch from the fob just to confirm everything was responding. It was. She saved a good chunk compared to what a dealer would have charged for a diagnosis alone, let alone a new key.
The CR2025 fix is not always the answer. But it is always the right first question to ask.
